I'd like also to make a small review, since I found that they have really good ideas behind the concepts of the species, so here I go!
Wanderers on the galaxy - Concept:
With several good ideas behind, whether you like sci-fi or fantasy, you'll find several turn ons on this species, since -Yeah, you were thinking about it- they are an humanoid alien species with element-based magical powers!
When taking a look at the well detailed lore, I can't help but feel like they have a strong inspiration from fantasy elves (Dark elves and drow from the DnD lore specially) with the added twist (With a good taste of Mass Effect) of their setting being based on a totally science fiction universe with a postapocalitic kind of background.
That setting helps for creating totally different situations that, I place my bet on it, will delight those who dare to enter their dark yet fascinating universe and get a character.
You like dense family disputes stories? It seems to me they fit prefectly. Stories of wars and fallen heroes? They fit too. Fan of Dune, GoT, or Forgotten Realms? Ohhh heck yeah you'll love 'em.
The only downturn I find for now is, that being a new species, there aren't many stories and their lore is short. Myself I can't wait to see when the community pops up and starts filling their universe with life.
Power of technology and darkness - Artwork:
Now speaking of the artwork used for their creation; 3D Designer Miz-Inthesky
has managed to create the full species directly from 3D renders. While the middle term of this kind of artwork here in deviantart is pretty poor, with most of the artwork made from people who are just scratching the surface of this media, the artist manages to join both her experience and her heavily gothic influenced style to create stunning renders and pieces from the characters. Adult and dark, the species concept and artwork go hand by hand till the end in a perfect symbiotic relationship.
For sure, artists willing to give it a go will have plenty of artwork to learn from when doing their own pieces and designs for the species, while other 3D artists will be for sure interested in working with the assets for their own designs.
Embrace the elements - Final thoughts:
Though still in a very early stage, the Nyxii's are a very appealing closed species; even though I am not usually fond of that of "closed species", I must admit is a positive point that the artist has made them a "pay what you want" species, that being said, not only money works! You can make a good exchange in spice (As we say here) and trade artwork or features for a character. In my opinion, that is as good as it's bad- Don't take me wrong, but calling them a "closed species" might lead users to mistakingly thinking that they need to pay and don't taking their time to read the several articles and journals written about the species (Though maybe it scares away those that would just throw away a crappy doodle and get a character?).
My thoughts about the concepts are overall really positive; I've always been fond of dark fantasy settings like Warhammer. That, along with the stylized design of the characters and the apparently complex and promising background (I'd really love to see more about the legends, stories and such) makes a perfect ambience for roleplayers, writers and artists to find a brand new playground.
And of course, to celebrate the release, Miz is making a game give away so, go and read about the species!
